What is refinishing?
Your tub isn't worn out. It's just worn.
Bathtub refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — restores the surface of the tub you already have instead of removing it. Bathman Refinishing cleans the old finish, repairs the damage underneath, then sprays on a new bonded coating. Most tubs we're called to in Metro Atlanta are structurally sound; what's failed is the glaze, the grout, and the color someone chose in 1994.
After 40 years across this metro, the pattern is familiar: the tubs we refinish in Decatur and East Atlanta bungalows are mostly 1920s–1950s cast iron under porcelain enamel, while out in Gwinnett and Cherokee subdivisions it's nearly all 1990s–2000s fiberglass tub-and-shower units. They need different preparation, and knowing which you have before we arrive is half the job.

Refinish if the tub is sound but stained, scratched, chipped or an outdated color. Replace it if it's cracked through, leaking, structurally soft, or if you're moving plumbing or converting to a walk-in shower — refinishing is a surface restoration, not a structural repair. Bathman Refinishing will tell you which one you're looking at.

Pink, almond, avocado, blue — dated wall tile refinished in place along with its grout lines, so the whole surround reads as one clean sealed surface instead of a grid of stains.

Spot work when the whole surface doesn't need doing: a chipped rim, a rust ring at the drain, cracks in fiberglass, holes left where old hardware came off.

What is bathtub refinishing?
Bathtub refinishing restores the surface of the tub you already have instead of removing it. The old finish is cleaned and prepared, chips, cracks and rust are filled, and a new coating is sprayed on and cured — usually in a single visit. The fixture, the plumbing and the surrounding tile all stay where they are.
What's the difference between refinishing, reglazing and resurfacing?
Nothing — they are three names for the same job. Refinishing describes the whole restoration: cleaning, repair, preparation and coating. Reglazing strictly names the final coating step, and resurfacing is the term used more often for pools and spas. Homeowners and contractors use all three interchangeably, so ask for whichever term you know.
How long does bathtub refinishing last?
A professionally refinished bathtub typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Lifespan depends heavily on how it's cleaned. The two most common causes of early wear are powdered abrasive cleansers and suction-cup bath mats, which trap water against the finish.
How much does refinishing cost compared to replacing?
Nationally, refinishing a standard bathtub runs roughly $300 to $600, while replacing one runs roughly $1,500 to $8,000 once you include demolition, disposal, the new fixture, plumbing, tile and labor. Refinishing commonly costs up to 75% less.

How soon can I use the tub again?
Most refinished tubs can be used again 24 to 48 hours after spraying. The coating keeps hardening for about 7 days, so keep bath mats, suction cups and cleaning products off it for the first week.
Does a refinished tub peel?
Peeling is a preparation failure, not a property of refinishing. It happens when the old surface wasn't fully cleaned, prepared and primed — which is exactly what consumer DIY kits can't do properly. A correctly prepped and sprayed surface bonds to the substrate and stays put.
Does refinishing smell, and is it safe?
There's a noticeable odor while the coating is sprayed and while it cures, and we'd rather tell you up front. The bathroom is ventilated during the work, technicians wear respirators, and the smell typically clears within about 24 hours. Keeping a window open and the bathroom door shut speeds it up.
On safety: under the EPA's 2024 rule through the Toxic Substances Control Act, methylene chloride is banned as a commercial bathtub stripper. Professional refinishers now use methylene-chloride-free stripping and coating systems.
Are DIY bathtub refinishing kits worth it?
They cost far less up front and they're the reason refinishing has a reputation for peeling. A kit applies a thin single-part coating — roughly 2 to 3 mils once cured — over a surface most homeowners can't properly strip or prepare. That's why kit finishes commonly fail within months to a couple of years.
The part people don't expect: stripping a failed kit coating adds cost to the professional job afterward.
When should I replace the tub instead of refinishing it?
Replace it if the tub is cracked through, leaking, or structurally soft underfoot, or if you're changing the bathroom layout or converting the tub to a walk-in shower. Refinishing renews a sound tub that's stained, scratched, chipped or dated — it does not repair structural failure, and we'll say so rather than sell you a finish that sits on a bad tub.
Do you refinish rental properties and apartment units?
Yes. Bathman Refinishing works with landlords and property managers across Metro Atlanta on single units and multi-unit turnovers. Refinishing returns a unit to rentable condition in a day instead of taking the bathroom out of service for a week, which is usually the deciding factor between turns.
Can you fix a chip or a crack instead of doing the whole tub?
Yes. Chips, cracks, rust rings around the drain and overflow, and holes left by removed hardware can be repaired as spot work when the rest of the surface is fine. If the damage is widespread, refinishing the whole fixture usually costs less than repeated spot repairs.
Can ceramic wall tile be refinished instead of replaced?
Yes. Wall tile and its grout can be refinished in place to a single sealed color without opening the wall. This is the standard fix for pink, almond, blue or avocado tile that's structurally sound but dated.
How do I clean a refinished tub?
Non-abrasive liquid cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid powdered abrasives, scouring pads, bleach-heavy products and anything with ammonia. Skip suction-cup mats entirely — use a mat with a smooth backing if you need one.
